What motivates us

Dry Eye?

To many of you, dry eye disease may be something you have never heard of. It was for us. But as we began analyzing our community, it was evident that this was one of multiple unattended medical needs. All of a sudden, many of our loved ones were being diagnosed with Dry Eye Disease. We were witnessing firsthand how their quality of life was affected and how the treatments did not provide long-lasting effects. That’s how AliviEYE was born.

With AliviEYE we strive to offer an affordable, long-term treatment for dry eye disease that will help people live more comfortably.

Though multiple types of dry eye disease exist, we specialize in treating evaporative dry eye, which can be caused by disfunction or blockage of the Meibomian Glands present in our eyelids. Restoring their function is essential for tears not to evaporate too quickly.

Current Treatments are Extremely Expensive

Current long-term treatments for Dry Eye Disease due to Meibomian Gland Dysfunction (DED-MGD) can be extremely expensive and most of the time they are not covered by health insurers.

Eye Drops Don't Treat the Cause, Only the Symptoms

On the other hand, eye drops are usually the status-quo for treating DED-MGD, however, they do not treat the cause, only the symptoms and have a significant effect on a patient’s quality of life since they have to be applied up to 4 times a day.

Huge Need for an Alternative Long Term Treatment

For this reason, there is a need for a medical treatment alternative that is low-cost and can treat in the long-term, especially in middle-income countries in which the specialised devices have not been able to enter the market due to the high costs.

First Steps

AliviEYE started in 2021 as a capstone project for our multidisciplinary team of future Biomedical Enginners who were given the task of solving a particular medical necessity. Determined to develop health-assciated solutions, we have grown together but always remember where it all began.

Medical Input

Our product and all the research behind it aims to find natural solutions within our body. To do so, it was crucial to work together with ophthalmologists in an effort to develop a medically viable and functional product.

An eye-opening journey

Colombia is a place where you can easily get lost in your entrepreneurial path due to a lack of resources. As Latin Americans, START Fellowship 2022 allowed us to grow as a startup and build a future as entrepreneurs in a welcoming, supporting environment and teaching us a new set of skills we had not been exposed to coming from a scientific background.
